The vineyard's name is Boontling for grapevines. The burst of fruity aromatics offering freshly picked strawberries and sour cherries somewhat prepares the palate for the cascade of perfectly ripe, strawberry-like fruit that's rich and persistent, framed in cleansing acidity and enrobed in a velvety texture. Not a blockbuster, but rather a commanding presence on the palate that demands another sip. $49/46 cases

If you can't get any of the tiny-production Frattey Shams Pinot, search for this charmer from one of the valley's premier vineyards. Hints of smoke and allspice enhance ripe blackberry-black cherry fruit in the nose. On the palate, the wine is almost meaty, brimming with luscious black fruit laced with white pepper, and finishing long and slightly smoky. Intriguing, different and distinctive, this is a serious, profound Pinot meant to age at least 5 to 8 years. $37/471 cases

Fresh, fragrant, appealing aromas of crushed and juicy wild strawberries accented by subtle black licorice, candied ginger and toasted almonds. Silky smooth and elegant with medium tannins and copious strawberry-cassis fruit, a touch of dried herbs and a subtle leather note that carries into the finish, this is a persistent and nuanced Pinot that is a joy to contemplate as well as to drink.
