Figge Cellars

The following wines were reviewed by Senior Editor Lyn Farmer on January 23 during a private tasting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, hosted by Peter Figge of Figge Cellars. The wines were not tasted blind.

95   Figge Cellars, 2006 Chardonnay
Pelio Vineyard, Carmel Valley
Pale white gold color with a bright and complex bouquet emphasizing minerality and citrus. Lovely hints of lemon peel on the nose, and on the palate a very subtle citrus impression underscored by crisp acidity in perfect balance with abundant fruit. Hints of graphite and white peach enter on the exceptionally long finish. An elegant Chardonnay that is rich without a trace of heaviness. $42

94   Figge Cellars, 2005 Pinot Noir
Paraiso Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
Medium ruby color with hints of smoke, cooked sugar, rose petals, and black cherry on the nose. The bouquet blossoms with black fruit on a foundation of appealing minerality. The wine begins dry on the palate, then beautiful black fruit flavors and a velvet texture emerge. Round with well-balanced acidity and a long finish. A lovely balance of Burgundian and California styles of Pinot Noir and a great food wine. $45

96   Figge Cellars, 2006 Pinot Noir
Paraiso Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
Medium-dark ruby in color, with a shimmering translucency. Slightly darker than the 2005 and with a more complex nose. Forest floor aromas with a bit of orange peel give the wine an appealing bouquet. In the mouth, rich, ripe, velvety tannins are immediately apparent but with copious black fruit giving the wine exquisite balance. Orange peel and a bit of smoke emerge on a very long, elegant finish. This wine is more closed now than the 2005, but with an additional year of bottle age it will surpass its older sibling. $46

93   Figge Cellars, 2006 Pinot Noir
Pelio Vineyard, Carmel Valley
Medium-dark ruby color and not quite as brilliant as the Paraiso. Pelio is a cooler vineyard than Paraiso and the wine shows that with crisper, more angular aromas of cherry and black fruit. Slightly more acidic and tannic than the Paraiso, this is a more restrained wine. Black fruit flavors and some pine and cedar notes emerge on the long, dry finish. $46

93   Figge Cellars, 2005 Syrah
Sycamore Flat Vineyard, Arroyo Seco
Deep ruby color with lovely aromas of black fruit and a light herbal note in the background. This is reminiscent of a good Hermitage with moderate alcohol (14.2%) and ripe fruit held in check by crisp acidity on entry, then an explosion of bright blackberry flavors on the palate. The medium finish leaves a subtle, well-balanced impression. $38

94   Figge Cellars, 2006 Syrah
Sycamore Flat Vineyard, Arroyo Seco
Deep ruby color. Closed bouquet just hints at the ripe black fruit that is readily apparent on the palate. The wine clearly has great fruit in reserve that will emerge with more time in the bottle. At the moment, it is unbalanced on entry with a lean attack that emphasizes the wine's acidity; the fruit balance emerges slowly on the palate, gradually unveiling marvelous black cherry and blackberry notes. Awesome, velvety texture and exceptional length on the palate, promising great things for the future. $42
