The final impression is one of elegance and immediate appeal. $25

A fine example of a distinctive wine that is still very true to its varietal character. $25

Vietti

The following wines were reviewed by Lyn Farmer on November 5 during a lunch at Cioppino in Key Biscayne, Florida, with Vietti winemaker Luca Currado. The wines were not tasted blind.

90   Vietti, 2007 Roero Arneis
Roero
Pale straw color with a lovely, light aroma of white flowers. Soft and elegant on the palate with flavors of fig and pear given added dimension by a thread of light citrus. Excellent texture; shows fine structure with mineral notes emerging on the long finish. $25

90   Vietti, 2006 Tre Vigne
Dolcetto d'Alba
Medium ruby color with a gorgeous nose of black cherry, blueberry and red fruit, highlighted by subtle notes of almond and Provençal herbs. Round, fruity entry with medium body and flavors of black cherry and red fruit filling the mouth. Very well balanced with moderate acidity and a medium finish. A lovely, food-friendly wine. $26

91   Vietti, 2006 Tre Vigne
Barbera d'Asti
Medium ruby color with traces of purple. The nose gives lovely red cherry and vanilla notes with hints of espresso and black fruit. Coffee and black fruit elements expand on the palate and lively acidity provides good structure and length. A finely balanced wine. $18

94   Vietti, 2005 Scarrone
Barbera d'Alba
The 60-year-old Scarrone vineyard produces only 3,400 bottles in a good year, like 2005. It shows its intensity upfront with a deep ruby color and a forward, expressive nose of plum, anise and buttery oak. A light herbal quality lingers in the background, then comes forward on the palate with black fruit, especially black cherry and plum, and a bit of tar. Great structure, with good acidity balancing the medium body. Very dry with appealing minerality on a long finish. $28

94   Vietti, 2004 Castiglione
Barolo
The grapes for this wine come from vineyards in four different villages. The color is a deceptively light ruby with just hints of pink and orange at the edge. Powerful nose of clean, fresh aromatic tea, herbs, flowers and dried citrus. In the mouth, it slowly reveals leather, black cherry and spice, all beautifully balanced and showing its considerable, ripe tannins only on the long finish. There is great elegance as well as power to this appealing Barolo. $47

95   Vietti, 2004 Lazzarito
Barolo
The Lazzarito vineyard (one of four single vineyard Barolos produced by Vietti) is in Serralunga and is notable for the age of its vines (40 years) and its low yields (just over 1 ton per acre). Luca Currado calls this wine "our most modern interpretation of Barolo." Medium garnet in color with shimmering orange highlights. Brimming with complex aromas of plum, black cherry and a bit of ripe fig. A clean, bracing entry that at first seems sharply etched and angular, but as layers of flavor unfold, so does a surprising lushness, with leather, black fruit, plum, fig and tar - all entwined in a savory web of flavor. Snippets of the many palate flavors linger on the long, racy, clean finish. A lovely and loving evocation of Barolo's complexity without a trace of hardness. $130

95   Vietti, 2004 Masseria
Barbaresco
Vietti's only Barbaresco, a single vineyard offering that results in only about 5,000 bottles in a good vintage, and has an attractive medium brick-ruby color. The nose is very appealing with black fruit, especially cherry and plum, elegantly matched with more earthy aromas of leather and herbs. On the palate, one is first taken with the rich texture, then by the firm backbone of crisp acidity that gives impressive structure. Mineral flavors join with a savory combination of dried citrus, mocha and plum with the faintest hint of spice for added appeal. A wonderful and evocative balance of finesse and concentration with a long, memorable finish. Displays great age-worthiness. $110
