Port & Madeira
The wines that follow were reviewed by BuyLine panelist Lyn Farmer during a September Radisson Seven Seas cruise to Portugal, France and Spain. The tasting was organized by Los Angeles-area retailer David Breitstein of Duke of Bourbon and travel agent Jim Basciglia, and was led by wine importer and Port and Madeira expert Bartholomew Broadbent. The wines were not tasted blind.
92
Grahams, 1963 Vintage Port
Portugal
Typical of '63s, the color is bright ruby, but starting to acquire a slightly brick-orange rim. That said, the wine was more mature than expected, with a surprisingly spirited nose and very pure anise and elderberry aromas. The lovely Grahams' sweetness was present with hints of Demerara sugar, but the flavor is starting to weaken. Slightly vegetal with the tannins coming through on the long finish. $300
96
Fonseca, 1948 Vintage Port
Portugal
In the glass, the wine is immediately striking with its lovely, medium ruby color - just superb. Slightly meaty nose with hints of black olive and fruit that is more subtle than opulent. Very creamy in the mouth with stunning texture; well-integrated black fruit flavors display great power and hints of roses linger on the palate. The finish is not as long as one would expect - the only place it seems less than stunning. More youthful tasting than the Grahams. $975
90
Dom Pedro V, 1853 Millennium Port Reserve
Portugal
Colheita ports are single vintage Tawny Ports and generally rare. According to Broadbent, many Colheitas of this age are of suspect provenance, but given this wine's bottling by Niepoort he is inclined to trust its authenticity. Deep tawny color, a bit cloudy with a pale green shade at the rim much like a classic Madeira. Intense nose and flavors of raisin and herbs along with prominent alcohol and noticeable acidity. Some lime and brown sugar on the finish; almost Madeira-like in its nutty vanillin qualities. (Bottled in 2001 by Niepoort.) $200
91
D'Oliveira, 1862 Sercial Reserva
Madeira
Broadbent believes this was likely a single vintage rather than from a solera. The wine has a very deep tawny color and an intense, deep bouquet of lime, date, vanilla and coconut. Vanilla predominates on the palate with a creamy texture and well-balanced acidity. Slightly short in the finish. Broadbent noted the flavor is reminiscent of pomegranates. $495
95
D'Oliveira, 1905 Verdelho Reserva
Madeira
This bottle, acquired from the winery, was quite striking, with a stain remaining after decanting, a clear indicator of upright storage, which is the correct method for keeping Madeira. Broadbent noted that Madeiras have more to fear from tainted corks than dried corks, and that bottles should not be stored on their side. Very dark tawny hue with a slight ruby edge. Quite pungent on the nose and very hot, developing a cocoa quality. Brown sugar, lime and coconut on the palate with a silky texture and a sweet, extremely long close. $275
92
Velha, 1948 Malvasia Reserva
Madeira
Quite light ruby-tawny in color. On first whiff, the nose is very oxidized with a metallic bite; it then opens to cedar, pencil lead and soft lime impressions. Similar qualities are reflected on the palate, where the wine is quite vibrant and a bit tannic with a lovely sweetness. Lean, with very clean alcohol on the finish. Subtle and elegant; a striking example of an older Malvasia. $295
93
D'Oliveira, 1795 Terrantez
Madeira
This extremely rare, ancient Madeira prompted Broadbent to ask the tasters to recall the time in which it was made. He maintained that Madeira was the most American of wines because "it was used to toast the Declaration of Independence and was the favored beverage of George Washington, among many others." To taste an example made during our nation's formative years was a particularly moving experience, indeed. Deep caramel-ruby hue; limpid and bright. Typical lime and brown sugar aromas; almost rum-like. Quite bright in the mouth with lime and lots of alcohol heat. Great richness that extends through intense flavors of date and lime. More than a mere curiosity. $1,500
