Dry Creek Zins

On August 10, Contributing Editor Gerald D. Boyd attended a two-day exploration of Dry Creek Valley wines hosted by the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley, in Sonoma County. What follows are tasting notes and comments from a three-flight, tutored tasting of Dry Creek Zinfandels. The wines were not tasted blind. Word scores are based on the BuyLine rating system.

Flight 1: Dry Creek Valley Terroir. The intention of this flight of wines was to show the influences of terroir aspects such as the nearby Pacific Ocean, fog and soils, but that intention was trumped by winemaking. As Mick Unti, one of the winemakers aptly put it, "The winemaking masks the aspects of terroir."

Flight 2: Blending vs. 100 percent Zinfandel. Although other varieties were used as blenders in some of these wines, the most common thread was petite sirah. The seminar, one of a series held over the course of the weekend, was moderated by Michael Broadbent, M.W. and Guigal importer Frederick Ek. A selection of the wines are presented in the order they were poured and were not tasted blind. Prices are current retail.
